Nike 1/2 Cent Cranberry Release Date

The Nike 1/2 Cent Cranberry will release on footlocker.com and House of Hoops locations Saturday, December 18th.

This is the second 1/2 Cent of the holiday season, with the Eggplant we showed you last week releasing in October. The popular hybrid blends all the shoes in the Air Penny line, which most famously includes the Foamposite. The injection-molded foam shell was an innovation that made waves in the sneaker world, and is now being used on other Nike and Jordan Brand models ranging from the AJ 1 Armor to the Air Force 1.

The 1/2 Cent is also known for being a “puppet PE” belonging to Lil’ Penny, a puppet used in Nike Basketball commercials. The real Penny Hardaway had already retired when the shoe released, so dropping a puppet into the campaign made for an easy transition. Lil’ Penny’s voice was comedian Chris Rock, and the character even made his way into a Billboard #1 music video for Blackstreet- No Diggity. For more shots check the Gallery.

Nike 1/2 Cent Eggplant Release Date

The Nike 1/2 Cent Eggplant hits footlocker.com and House of Hoops locations on Wednesday, October 20th.

The 1/2 cent is a rare example of a hybrid that may actually be more popular than most of its elements (only the Foamposite stands on equal or better footing). The shoe blends the Air Penny line 1-4 and the Foamposite, but took a new twist by making it a “puppet PE” for Lil’ Penny, instead of a PE for Penny Hardaway who had already retired. Lil’ Penny was a puppet used in Nike basketball commercials, with the voice of Chris Rock. Lil’ Penny gained enough notoriety to insert himself into the pop culture landscape, including a Blackstreet music video for “No Diggity,” a Billboard #1 hit in 1996.
